What Is String Lighting?
String lighting — also called bistro lighting, cafe lighting, market lighting, or festoon — is a run of bulbs spaced along a wire. The bulbs are attached to the wire itself, and the wire is anchored at each end, so the light follows whatever line it is hung on.
The effect is warm, even light overhead rather than the bright pools that floor fixtures throw. Runs can be dimmed, so a room can move from dinner brightness to something softer once the dancing starts.
String lighting is one piece of a full event lighting design, and it is usually the piece guests remember.
Where String Lighting Hangs
Depending on the space, there are several ways to install string lighting:
- Tents — along the ridge, or crossed as a canopy under the peak
- Ballrooms and rafters — suspended from existing rigging points or venue beams
- Patios, courtyards, and rooftops — anchored to railings, walls, or existing structures
- Warehouses and raw spaces — where the lighting becomes the ceiling
- Rooms with no hang points at all — we bring a pipe and base pole system and build our own

Do you install the string lighting, or do I?
We do. Our crew designs the layout, hangs the runs, powers them, and takes everything down after your event. You never handle a bulb.
What if my venue has no hang points?
We bring a pipe and base pole system and build our own structure. Venues that will not allow anything attached to the building are common, and it is not a reason to give up the look.
Do I need to schedule a site visit?
Usually not. Most clients send a floor plan, photos, or a picture of the look they want, and we design from that. If you are not sure what will work in your space, describe it and we will make a recommendation.
Can string lights be dimmed?
Yes, and it is the most underused thing we offer. Bright and even through dinner, low and warm once the dancing starts.
Do you supply the power?
Yes. Power distribution and cable management are part of the install, so nothing ends up running off a venue outlet on an extension cord.
How far in advance should I book string lighting?
Two to three months is the comfortable window, especially for spring and fall dates. If your date is sooner than that, ask anyway — availability depends on what else is going out that weekend.
What is the difference between string lights, bistro lights, cafe lights, and market lights?
Nothing. They are four names for the same thing: a run of spaced bulbs on a suspended cable. Festoon is the term used more often on the production side.
How much does string light rental cost?
It depends on the size of the space, how many runs it takes, how complicated the hang is, whether we need to bring poles, and how much install and strike time the venue allows. Send us your space and your date and we will price it.
